YOUNG ORGANIST COMPETITION 2012

Rules of the Competition:

Who may compete:

The competition is open to students currently enrolled in Grades 8-12 who are studying organ. Membership in AGO is not required. Transportation and housing for the competitors must be arranged and paid for by the contestants. Participants younger than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

How to enter:

The students must complete the application form for The Young Organist Competition 2012 as found on the Columbia AGO website. The student must pay the $25 entry fee (check payable to Columbia AGO) and submit a CD of the required repertoire as listed below. It is acceptable to perform the same repertoire on the CD and the live competition. Students should also send a brief biography. All materials must be sent to the chair of the competition and postmarked by January 6, 2012.

Repertoire Requirements:

Repertoire should consist of a significant work by J.S. Bach and a piece from the 19th century or a piece written since 1920. The pieces must be original compositions for pipe organ. In addition, the student should play one of four designated hymns which will be sent to the applicants. The performance of the hymn should include an introduction and two verses of the hymn. Total performance time should not exceed 30 minutes. Memorization is not required.

Deadlines:

Deadline for submission of the application, the $25 entry fee (check made payable to Columbia AGO ), the CD, and the biographical information is January 6, 2012. The semi-final round will be judged by a committee of organists from the Columbia Chapter AGO. Students will be notified of audition results by January 16, 2012.
